Well, sometimes you just want to relax and let others cook for you. Or go out and mingle with the crowd. Or have dinner by the sea after a day on the beach. It&#8217;s for those days that we prepared a list of good restaurants in and around Tavira. Our all-time favourites are <em>Casa de Pasto Fernanda e Campinos<\/em>, <em>No\u00e9lia e Jer\u00f3nimo<\/em>, <em>Mesa Farta<\/em> and <em>Retiro dos Ca\u00e7adores<\/em>. If wine is what you look for in a restaurant, don&#8217;t miss <em>Mercearia da Aldeia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tavira<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tavira tem muitos restaurantes, alguns deles com uma localiza\u00e7\u00e3o privilegiada nas margens do rio Gil\u00e3o. No ver\u00e3o, estes restaurantes atraem muitos turistas dos hot\u00e9is e resorts de f\u00e9rias nas redondezas. H\u00e1 op\u00e7\u00f5es para todos os gostos, mas a maioria dos restaurantes serve comida bastante mediana. No entanto, alguns restaurantes destacam-se e, desde dezembro de 2021, Tavira tem o seu primeiro restaurante com uma estrela Michelin: o <em>A Ver Tavira<\/em>, do chef Lu\u00eds Brito. <em>A Ver Tavira<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mesafarta.com\/\"><strong><em>Mesa Farta<\/em><\/strong><\/a> ($$): Chef Jo\u00e3o Viegas&#8217; restaurant <em>Mesa Farta<\/em>, located just a few metres from Tavira&#8217;s train station, is the latest addition to Tavira&#8217;s rapidly changing restaurant scene. Opened in 2024, Mesa Farta offers a creative spin on classic Portuguese dishes while staying true to their roots. Little more than one year after its opening, the restaurant received a Michelin recommendation. Before opening Mesa Farta, Jo\u00e3o Viegas worked at national and international restaurants such as Eleven in Lisbon, Nuno Mendes&#8217; Viajante in London and El Celler de Can Roca in Spain &#8230; and also as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C55UKwMoZav\/\">Private Chef at Casas da Serra Tavira<\/a>! We especially loved the red prawns, which were not on the regular menu, and the homemade pickles which add a special note to many of Jo\u00e3o&#8217;s dishes. The wine list, while good, is not extensive, but has been evolving very positively since the opening. Phone: (+351) 281 416 371.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PISAGATINHOS\/\"><strong><em>Retiro dos Ca\u00e7adores<\/em><\/strong><\/a> ($): A tiny tavern where local fishermen have their first glass of red wine at 7 a.m. after a hard night\u2019s work. It does not look particularly inviting, but has the tastiest <em>choquinhos fritos<\/em> with french fries! For the adventurous. Phone: (+351) 963 746 383.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/avertavira.com\/en\/\" target=\"_self\">A Ver Tavira<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$$$<\/strong>): O primeiro restaurante de Tavira com uma estrela Michelin oferece menus inovadores ao almo\u00e7o e ao jantar, incluindo uma op\u00e7\u00e3o vegetariana. Pode experimentar a harmoniza\u00e7\u00e3o de vinhos ou escolher entre a sua excelente carta de vinhos. Telefone: (+351) 281 381 363.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restaurantes de praia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zomatoportugal.com\/r\/19078707\/casa-na-igreja-vila-nova-de-cacela\" target=\"_self\">Casa da Igreja<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Cacela-a-Velha \u2013 <strong>$<\/strong>): Existem apenas algumas mesas no exterior e ter\u00e1 de chegar cedo para encontrar lugar. Mas a Casa da Igreja \u00e9 certamente um dos melhores locais do mundo para comer ostras frescas. Localizada junto \u00e0 igreja da bela aldeia de Cacela-a-Velha, tem uma vista fant\u00e1stica sobre a Ria Formosa e o mar. Telefone: (+351) 289 952 126.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chacomaguasalgada.com\">Ch\u00e1 com \u00c1gua Salgada<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Vila Nova de Cacela &#8211; <strong>$$<\/strong>): In summer, Manta Rota beach is usually too crowded. The reason is that you don\u2019t have to take the boat to get to the sandy side of the beach. And there are many parking lots right next to the beach. By contrast, in winter it\u2019s a nice place to go for long walks by the sea. It\u2019s also in wintertime that we recommend the beach restaurant <em>Ch\u00e1 com \u00c1gua Salgada<\/em> (which means \u201cTea with Salty Water\u201d). The food is a modern take on the typical Portuguese cuisine. The wine list is varied and contains some good Portuguese reds and whites. Try Mapa or Monte da Pe\u00e7eguina for a white. If you prefer full and complex red wines, try the excellent Quinta do Mouro from Estremoz or the Dona Maria Amantis Reserva. If you are looking for something different, try Casa Cadaval\u2019s Pinot Noir or anything by Casa de Mouraz, an innovative producer of natural and authentic back-to-the-roots wines from organic viticulture. (<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Update:<\/span><\/em> the last time we went there in October 2022 the food and service were still OK, but overall a bit disappointing and the &#8220;sommelier&#8221; talked too much memorized blah-blah. If you want to hear about and taste less common Portuguese wines, <em>Mercearia da Aldeia<\/em> in Santo Estev\u00e3o is your place to go).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/lifecooler.com\/artigo\/comer\/restaurante-marisqueira-fbrica-do-costa\/335800\" target=\"_self\">Restaurante Costa<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Praia da F\u00e1brica, Cacela-a-Velha \u2013 <strong>$$<\/strong>): Este restaurante est\u00e1 localizado junto \u00e0 Praia da F\u00e1brica, uma das mais belas praias do Algarve. \u00c9 um bom local para ver o p\u00f4r do sol e jantar depois de um dia na praia. Embora, ao longo dos anos, o restaurante tenha perdido algum do seu encanto e a qualidade da comida e do servi\u00e7o tenha diminu\u00eddo, a vista continua a ser boa. Nothing special, but it\u2019s OK for lunch if you spend the day at Barril beach. Phone: (+351) 962 759 795.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cabanas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cabanas used to be a small fishing village at the <em>Ria Formosa<\/em>. In the past decades it has grown considerably and the new houses and apartment complexes are not always examples of good architecture. Still, the seafront is a beautiful place to watch the sun go down and among the many restaurants there&#8217;s the fantastic <em>No\u00e9lia e Jer\u00f3nimo<\/em> and a few very good ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/noeliaejeronimorestaurante\/\">No\u00e9lia e Jer\u00f3nimo<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$$$<\/strong>): In 2015 Portuguese writer and journalist Miguel Esteves Cardoso declared <em>No\u00e9lia e Jer\u00f3nimo<\/em> \u201cworld\u2019s best restaurant\u201d. Even though he might have been inspired by the restaurant\u2019s excellent wines when he wrote this, chef No\u00e9lia\u2019s take on the Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine is innovative and clearly stands out from the normal Algarvian menu. If you go here once, you\u2019ll always come back. Some of our favourites are: <em>T\u00e1rtato de Atum<\/em>, <em>Pataniscas de Polvo<\/em>, <em>Ceviche de Dourada do Mar<\/em>, <em>Arroz de Lim\u00e3o com Corvina e Ameijoas<\/em>, <em>Arroz de Ostras \u201cMoinho dos Ilh\u00e9us\u201d<\/em> or just a grilled fish or steak \u2026 If you saved some appetite for the dessert, ask for the <em>Pudim do Abade de Priscos<\/em>! No\u00e9lia has an excellent and diverse wine list. The restaurant is fully booked weeks in advance, even in winter! So make your reservation as early as possible! Phone: (+351) 281 370 649.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/restauranteomonteiro\/\"><em><strong>O Monteiro<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (<strong>$<\/strong>): Good and inexpensive restaurant with well-served portions located at the seafront of the village of Cabanas. The <em>Cataplana de Tamboril<\/em> is worth the wait. Phone: (+351) 281 370 825.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/restaurante.pedro.cabanas\/\">O Pedro<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$$<\/strong>): Located on the boardwalk of Cabanas with a view to the <em>Ria Formosa<\/em>, <em>O Pedro<\/em> is a good, yet reasonably priced, restaurant. Besides the \u201cnormal\u201d fish and meat dishes, it has a reputation for its fish stews and seafood risottos. If you want to try something special, have a go at <em>Feijoada de Lingueir\u00e3o<\/em> or <em>A\u00e7orda de Marisco<\/em>. Phone: (+351) 281 370 425.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/restauranteidealcabanas.negocio.site\/\">Restaurante Ideal<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$<\/strong>): Long-established restaurant in the centre of Cabanas, near the boardwalk and the Ria Formosa. Try <em>Sopa do Mar<\/em> or the tuna steak <em>Bife de Atum \u00e0 Ideal<\/em>. If your kids are reluctant to eat fish, have them try <em>Filetes de Peixe Galo<\/em>. Phone: (+351) 281 370 232.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Luz de Tavira<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/merceariadaaldeia.pt\/\"><strong><em>Mercearia da Aldeia<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Santo Estev\u00e3o &#8211; <strong>$$<\/strong>): Mercearia da Aldeia may be the most surprising restaurant of the entire Algarve. From the outside it&#8217;s a small and simple roadside tavern. Once inside, you will be overwhelmed by the huge variety of rare Portuguese wines, often from very small producers, that the owners Maria Jo\u00e3o Madeiro and Jos\u00e9 Soares have collected over the past years. With more than 3000 different wines and owners who will enthusiastically tell you the story of every single one of them, this is every wine lover&#8217;s dream. On our first visit, we had partridge, wild rabbit and pigeon accompanied by the last bottle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garrafeiranacional.com\/2017-altas-quintas-viuva-le-cocq-reserva-tinto.html\">Vi\u00fava Le Cocq Reserva 2017<\/a> Alentejo red. Since then we returned many times, always relying on the owners&#8217; wine recommendations. <a href=\"https:\/\/expresso.pt\/boa-cama-boa-mesa\/2022-09-21-Nesta-mercearia-em-Tavira-ha-uma-Calhandra-de-carne-e-enchidos-que-acompanha-mais-de-tres-mil-vinhos-efda7223\">In a recent story<\/a>, the weekly newspaper Expresso describes very well the uniqueness of this place, Try it before everybody else does! (Phone: (+351) 925 007 215.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.pt\/Restaurant_Review-g8263924-d2214748-Reviews-Marisqueira_Fialho_Restaurant-Luz_de_Tavira_Faro_District_Algarve.html\">Restaurante\/Marisqueira o Fialho<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$$<\/strong>): Located right next to the Ria Formosa, <em>O Fialho<\/em> is a simple, but excellent restaurant whose specialty is fresh fish and seafood. Try to get a table outside. Highly recommended both for lunch and dinner. <em>O Fialho<\/em> is one of those restaurants that you\u2019ll never find in downtown Tavira. Phone: (+351) 281 961 222.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Santa Luzia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santa Luzia is a beautiful fishing village with various good restaurants. Most of the restaurants are located on the boardwalk, with a nice view over the Ria Formosa. The specialty in Santa Luzia is dozens of variations of octopus (for example at <em>Casa do Polvo Tasquinha<\/em> or <em>Polvo &amp; Companhia<\/em>). But it also has one of the best fish restaurants in the Algarve: <em>Capelo<\/em>. Go there after a day on the beaches of <em>Praia do Barril<\/em> or <em>Terra Estreita<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/orestaurantealcatruz\/\">Restaurante Alcatruz<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$<\/strong>): The restaurant is hidden in one of the back streets of Santa Luzia. It serves fresh fish, octopus and a variety of small starters. Good regional food from the fishing village of Santa Luzia. Phone: (+351) 281 381 092.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marisqueiracapelo\">Restaurante Marisqueira Capelo<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (<strong>$$<\/strong>): One of the very best fish and seafood restaurants between Faro and Vila Real de Santo Ant\u00f3nio and definitely our to-go place for grilled fish! Beautifully located at the harbourside of Santa Luzia. In July and August the restaurant doesn\u2019t accept reservations. Be there early or wait in line with a nice view of the boats in the harbour. Our favourite starters are <em>Ameijoas<\/em> and a small plate of <em>Camar\u00e3o de Monte Gordo<\/em>. As a main dish try the <em>Pregado<\/em> (turbot) or grilled slices of <em>Corvina<\/em> and accompany with a bottle of chilled white <em>Cartuxa<\/em> or <em>Espor\u00e3o Reserva<\/em> from the Alentejo region. Phone: (+351) 281 381 670.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Serra de Tavira (the hills of Tavira)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.pt\/Restaurant_Review-g1190875-d12505985-Reviews-Restaurante_Casa_de_Pasto_Fernanda_E_Campinas-Manta_Rota_Faro_District_Algarve.html\">Casa de Pasto Fernanda e Campinas<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Corte Ant\u00f3nio Martins &#8211; <strong>$<\/strong>): A simple restaurant with the tastiest regional food of the \u201cHinterland\u201d of the Algarve. A very typical dish is <em>A\u00e7orda de Galinha<\/em> which has to be ordered a day in advance. They have the best grilled Iberian pork (<em>Mista de Porco Preto<\/em>) and good wines (for example the red Alentejo wine <em>P\u00eara Grave<\/em> and a selection of wines by <em>Herdade da Bombeira<\/em> in Mertola). For a digestive, ask for a small shot of homemade <em>Medronho<\/em>. Phone: (+351) 281 951 770.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Olh\u00e3o<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/chachacha.pt\/\"><em>Ch\u00e1 Ch\u00e1 Ch\u00e1<\/em><\/a> ($$)<\/strong>: Hidden in the backstreets of Olh\u00e3o, just steps from the famous waterfront market, Ch\u00e1 Ch\u00e1 Ch\u00e1 is a delightful surprise. Founded by former Guardian food writer Kevin Gould, this charming spot sources its ingredients fresh from the market each morning, with a menu that changes daily based on what&#8217;s available. The cuisine blends Portuguese classics with Mediterranean and Latin American influences \u2013 think grilled lion&#8217;s mane mushrooms, aubergine with lemon tahini, and perfectly fresh seafood with unexpected twists. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, with eclectic d\u00e9cor and a warm, welcoming team. Book ahead as it&#8217;s deservedly popular, and note they only accept cash. Phone: (+351) 918 727 242.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faro<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epicurwinebar.com\/\"><em>Epicur Wine Boutique &amp; Food<\/em><\/a> ($$-$$$)<\/strong>: This sophisticated wine bar on Rua Alexandre Herculano brings a fresh approach to Faro&#8217;s dining scene. Owners Jorge Santos and Pedro Rodrigo have created an intimate space with just a handful of tables, where over 200 Portuguese wines (plus select international labels) pair beautifully with creative small plates. The menu changes regularly but might include Asian-inspired tacos, innovative tapas, artisan cheeses and charcuterie boards. For the full experience, try their 7 Moments tasting menu with wine pairings. But regular guests order small snacks like the famous <em>Prego do Lombo 60Gr<\/em> while concentrating on the wine. The atmosphere is stylish yet relaxed, perfect for wine enthusiasts and food lovers seeking something beyond traditional Portuguese cuisine. Book ahead as the limited seating fills quickly. Phone: (+351) 914 614 612.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ayamonte (Spain)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiendagourmetortaultramarino.com\/\"><em>Alimentacion Orta Ultramarinos<\/em><\/a> ($$) <\/strong>: Just a quick ferry ride from Vila Real de Santo Ant\u00f3nio, this atmospheric spot in Ayamonte&#8217;s center has been serving locals since 1863. What appears to be a traditional ultramarinos (colonial goods shop) from the street transforms into something special once you step inside. Walk through the shop \u2013 past shelves lined with exceptional Spanish wines, conservas, and hanging jam\u00f3n ib\u00e9rico \u2013 to discover a charming bar area and secret garden patio with lemon trees. Everything served in the bar comes directly from the shop: top-quality Huelva hams, artisan cheeses (try the Payoyo or the goat cheese from Aracena), premium tinned seafood, and carefully selected natural wines. You can choose any bottle from the shop and enjoy it with a modest corkage fee. The knowledgeable staff will guide you through their collection of over 150 years of culinary tradition. The inventive menu changes regularly, featuring dishes like foie gras ice cream cones, tandoori sea bream, langoustine tempura with curry sauce, and duck croquettes with house-made duck bacon. The presentation is Instagram-worthy without being pretentious, and the eclectic interior creates a stylish yet comfortable atmosphere. Vegetarian and vegan options are unusually good for the area.
